Instructional Delivery Methods

Courses are offered using a variety of instructional delivery methods to best meet the needs of students. For information about courses and sections, you may log in to your Patriot Port account or communicate with your college navigator/faculty mentor or instructor.

Traditional

T

The instructor and students meet face-to-face, according to designated dates, times, and location. [Note: Activities in the course may include online research components or other online resources.]

Internet or Online

I

100% of instruction is delivered through the internet. [Note: May include a required face-to-face orientation or proctored exams.]

Web-supported or Web-assisted

W

Primary instructional delivery is via traditional face-to-face method with a requirement that students have internet access as a supplemental part the course. 50% or less of the instruction is delivered through the Internet. [Example: A class that meets on a regular schedule, but students are required to access instructional material, submit assignments, and/or interact with the instructor and other students via the internet.]

Hybrid

H

Primary instructional delivery is online with a requirement that students also meet in traditional face-to-face sessions as determined appropriate by the college. More than 50% but less than 100% of the instruction is delivered through the internet. [Example: An online course with a requirement that students attend one or more face-to-face labs.]

Synchronous

S

100% of instruction is delivered through the internet. In addition to the online course content, students are required to attend virtual meetings on a fixed schedule with both students and instructor present. [Example: An online course with a requirement that the students attend a weekly 50-minute virtual meeting that is facilitated by the course instructor.]

Cooperative Education

C

Instruction consisting of the integration of traditional classroom learning with supervised work experience, and where there is no internet requirement.

Independent Study 

N

Instruction undertaken with an individual student for a selected course. Instruction may be delivered through face-to-face, online, or a combination of both methodologies. [NOTE: Prior approval must be granted by the course instructor and academic dean.]

HyFlex

F

A multi-modal instructional delivery method where the college has the option to deliver the online portion of a curriculum course synchronously, asynchronously, or both as long as 100% of the instruction is offered face-to-face with the instructor in a physical classroom. Students may choose to attend the regularly scheduled in-person session or the online option on a session-by-session basis. [Example: A class that meets on a regular schedule in a physical classroom with an instructor present for all sessions, but students have the option to attend a session in-person in the physical classroom OR to access instructional material, submit assignments, and/or interact with the instructor and other students via the internet on a session-by-session basis.]
